OPEN CALL: Slovak Artist in Residence in Vienna / Artist in Residence × kex—kunsthalle exnergasse in Vienna
Deadline: 16. októbra
Výsledky: 6. novembra
Malý Berlín (Trnava, Slovakia) and kex—kunsthalle exnergasse (Vienna, Austria) are looking for a Slovak artist or researcher working at the intersection of art, urbanism and ecology for an artist in residence programme in Vienna in 2027.
The selected participant will have the opportunity to engage with questions surrounding urban development, ecology, food systems and the relationship between the city and its peripheral areas.
Short description of the open call topic
Since 2020, the kex— residency programme has been connected to the Zukunftshof, a former farm and agricultural site on the southern periphery of Vienna. The site is situated between agricultural fields, family houses and an area undergoing planned urban expansion. This particular location opens up questions about how cities grow, how urban and rural environments interact, and how ecological and social systems can coexist within rapidly changing urban landscapes.
The residency invites artists and researchers to critically explore themes such as urban agriculture and food of the future, urban fringes and peripheries, urban expansion, circular economy and ecology.
We are interested in practices that can look at these topics from different perspectives and make them accessible through artistic, participatory, interactive or research-based approaches. The residency does not prescribe a specific medium or artistic outcome. Instead, we encourage applicants to develop their own perspective in dialogue with the local context and to consider how their practice can respond to the specific environment of the Zukunftshof and Vienna.
Duration
Two months in 2027 (available time periods: 2 consecutive months between February – July or between September – December)
The exact duration and schedule of the residency will be agreed upon with the selected artist and kex—.
Who are we looking for?
The open call is aimed at Slovak artists and researchers working in contemporary art and related fields, particularly those whose practice engages with questions of urbanism, ecology, environment, social change, architecture.
We welcome applicants working across different disciplines and media, including visual arts, performance, sound, video, design and other interdisciplinary approaches.
The residency is for applicants who are interested in working independently while also engaging with the local context and communities.
Criteria for participants:
- Slovak artists and researchers,
- emerging or mid-career practitioners,
- applicants with an established artistic or research practice,
- interest in the topics and context of the residency,
- fluency in English and/or German,
- previous international experience is not necessary.
The selection will be based on the applicant’s artistic or research practice, experience, motivation and relevance of previous/current projects to the themes of the open call. An important part of the selection will be the applicant’s interest in the local context of Vienna and the Zukunftshof.
What does the residency offer?
- residency in Vienna for up to 2 months in 2027,
